Welsh Government has taken positive steps to commit to a fossil-free future for Wales. But its coal policy allows coal to be extracted in “exceptional circumstances”, a loophole that can be exploited by climate-wrecking companies.

Companies like Bryn Bach Coal, which is applying to extend opencast mining at Glan Lash in Carmarthenshire.  And ERI Ltd, which is applying to mine thousands of tonnes annually from coal tips in Bedwas.  If approved, these companies could set a dangerous precedent, ushering in another coal industry by the back door.

High courts in England and Northern Ireland have ruled out planning applications for fossil fuel sites. And Scotland already has an effective ban on mining.

There’s only one way to stop more proposals in their tracks. Demand a ban on coal extraction in Wales today.
