The ‘Share Economy’ is growing around the world with Libraries of Things or ‘Lots’ becoming popular.
Sharing Economy UK estimates that: ‘At the beginning of 2020 an Ipsos MORI poll found that 48% of people in the UK had recently bought, sold, swapped, rented, shared or donated something using the sharing economy. With the sector predicted to be worth £1.6bn to the UK by 2025, its rapid growth in recent years has also given many of us hope for a more productive and sustainable future economic model - one that enables us to share more and waste less.
Covid-19 has undoubtedly had an effect on some of these platforms whilst others businesses and sectors are experimenting with this way of doing things. The sharing economy will be vital in helping strengthen communities again and help us achieve our net zero emissions goals.
In Cardiff an enterprise called Benthyg (Welsh for lend or to borrow) has been set up in Rumney to provide this service to the local community.
