Let’s start with hopefully an easy change. Where does the business get its energy from? Switching to a green electricity tariff or company for example is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint quickly. This table has an interesting comparison for electricity companies. There are obviously plenty of comparison sites out there to choose from.

Then are all the usual ones we know about, turn off computers and lights when not in use (The average office typically wastes £6,000 each year by leaving equipment on over weekends and holidays), turn down the thermostat to a comfortable level, switch to energy efficient lighting if you haven’t done so already, decrease the brightness on your computer monitor,

Would the business or company be in a position to install new energy efficiency measures or solar panels for example?

The Carbon Trust and Business Wales are useful organisations who might be able to help or signpost sources of help to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Wales. They also have a list of Carbon Trust Accredited Suppliers in your area.

They also have a wide range of other handy guides and resources for SMEs on issues such as Energy Procurement and Green Tariffs

When it’s time to replace appliances, buy electrical appliances with the best energy efficiency ratings

Interestingly, the average website produces 1.76g CO2 per page view. For a website with 10,000 monthly page views, that’s 211 kg CO2 per year. If the business you are talking to has their own website, would they be interested in measuring its impact via an online calculator?
