Wales say no to storing high level nuclear waste

The UK government is looking for a location to host an underground site where high-level nuclear waste accumulated over decades can be dumped.
Consultation events are being held in Swansea on Tuesday, 12 March 2019, and Llandudno on 14 March 2019.
In response, Haf Elgar, Director of Friends of the Earth Cymru, said:
“The UK government will struggle to find any volunteers to live next to a nuclear waste dump, no matter how much they try to bribe people.
We don’t want nuclear waste stored in Llandudno, Swansea or anywhere else in Wales. We hope local communities in Wales say no to a geological disposal facility (GDF) for high level radioactive waste.
“As the long debacle over nuclear waste makes clear, it’s reckless to back an industry which produces a deadly waste that lasts for thousands of years with no safe way of disposing of it.
“It's hard to believe the UK government wants to repeat this mistake by backing more nuclear power stations at vast expense to tax-payers.
“We’re blessed with huge resources of renewable energy such as wind, tidal and solar. Let’s make the most of these safer, greener and often cheaper solutions, and not leave future generations a toxic legacy of radioactive waste.”
