Sustainable Fashion - what’s the problem?

The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. It is a major contributor to climate breakdown and the ecological emergency.

It has a huge carbon footprint.

Did you know the fashion industry emits more carbon than international flights and maritime shipping combined? This is because clothes can be transported long distances and are often produced in an energy intensive way.

It uses vast amounts of water.

In fact, the fashion industry is so water intensive it’s making water scarce in India and Pakistan. Some people are suffering from lack of water just because of this excessively thirsty industry.

It is heavily polluting.

Water, air, soil pollution are major issues. For instance, washing clothes releases microplastics into the oceans to the detriment of marine life.

The fashion industry results in a staggering amount of waste – research suggests 85% of our clothes end up in landfill or being incinerated.
