Campaigners disappointed at Cabinet Secretary's "breathtaking chutzpah"

Environmental campaigners have expressed their disappointment at a claim by a Cabinet Secretary of the Welsh Government that Friends of the Earth is misleading the people of Wales. The Economy and Infrastructure Secretary, Ken Skates, made the claim in response to Friends of the Earth Cymru’s allegations that the Welsh Government had repeatedly lied in trying to justify its M4 plans.

Director of Friends of the Earth Cymru, Gareth Clubb, said:

“It takes a breathtaking degree of chutzpah from a Cabinet Secretary of the Welsh Government - which has been conclusively proven to have lied to the public time and again over its M4 plans - to then accuse Friends of the Earth of misleading people.

“One of the few beacons of integrity, truth and fairness throughout the sorry M4 saga has been Friends of the Earth Cymru. I’m proud of the work we’ve done to uncover the Welsh Government’s regrettable actions.

“Here are some cast iron, rock solid facts:

“Fact 1: The Welsh Government deliberately misled the people of Wales.

“Fact 2: Hundreds of thousands of pounds of taxpayers’ money was used to propagate those lies.

“Fact 3: The Welsh Government tried to suppress publication of the information needed to prove that it lied.

“We have written to the Secretary seeking a clear statement deploring the lies of the previous administration and requesting an investigation into how the Welsh Government came to mislead the people of Wales so disastrously”.
