Building a low economy in Wales Report - Friends of the Earth Cymru response

Responding to today’s report, Director of Friends of the Earth Cymru Haf Elgar said:

“Setting our own statutory targets to reduce our carbon emissions is an historic step in tackling climate change in Wales. But the recommendations of the Committee on Climate Change are disappointing – indeed it’s a step backwards from our current commitments. This isn’t in line with the Paris Agreement on climate change or our responsibilities as a globally responsible nation under the Well-being of Future Generations Act.

“Now is the time to take action and aim for more ambitious targets, not to slow down and reduce our ambitions. Cutting emissions is a challenge but also a great opportunity to plan a sustainable low-carbon future for Wales – starting with the decisions taken now on how we spend public money, what infrastructure gets the go ahead and how to rapidly decarbonise our energy.

“We’re calling on the Welsh Government to take these recommendations as a starting point but to be more ambitious for Wales as a country with a positive low-carbon future that can deliver for the well-being of people and the planet.”
